Our Goal

The GVTT has several key aims:

First and foremost is running a successful heritage railway. Wales is known for its narrow gauge railways and the GVT is one of the last left that’s yet to be restored. Returning it to running order is the primary goal of the trust.

We’d also like this to be a chance to preserve local heritage and history where it survives, and recreate it where it’s been lost. For example, we plan to rebuild the unnecessarily demolished station building at Chirk as close to its original condition as possible.

Finally, we’d like the GVT to be a learning experience: somewhere volunteers can come to learn new skills, and visitors can learn about the historic tramway and how it affected the lives of the people who lived in and around the Ceiriog Valley. Being able to use the tramway as a teaching tool would be a wonderful opportunity for the future.
